-artistic interlude-

Zak Smith's Illustrations for Each Page of Gravity's Rainbow

I loved this at the Whitney Biennial last year, and went to see it twice. It's too bad the site can't show the drawings arrayed out next to each other. I suppose the work makes more sense if you've read the book. I tried reading it last year, and got about 20 pages before I had to return it (there's like 4000 words per page, insanity). But the drawings are still impressive. *sigh* I want to sketch like him.

I "interviewed" at a Chinese test prep school today. Basically I met them, gave them my resume, and they told me when to come in for training later. They said I'd probably be teaching SAT Verbal, which is mildly worrisome (inner karen: but what about math? I mean, I do math. Hello? Math? This isn't very reasona..math! C'mon people, math!), but I guess it can't be too hard. I'm still not entirely sure I have the job (Chinese ppl = vague). So in two weeks, I may very well still be hatching plans to somehow make money out of playing Text Twist and Word Whomp..

*yawn*

I slept for 13 hours last night. It was absolutely divine.

Then I read the Times for awhile. They have the new White Stripes music video on their site. The video is all grungy decay, vintage costumes, decrepit Victorian furniture, broken piano, pale browns and greys and you get the idea, but the real point is that this further proves the undeniable awesomeness of the Times. Is there anything you can't bring me, o glorious newspaper? No, no there isn't.

Mussina is pitching tonight. *squeals* Until then, I'll attempt to learn to play "I Summon You." This will mainly consist of me facing off against the evil F-chord. Who will win? We shall see in a few hours..

edit: *a few hours later* I can think of a few choice words that the "F" in "F-chord" could stand for..

DONEdonedonedonedonedone

Finals over! 24! Text Twist! I'm listening to Spoon! It doesn't get any better than this!

During my math final, I metaphorically kicked Fourier in the face. Hi-yah! Ok, maybe I just poked him in the face. But I poked him really hard. And I bet I gave Laplace a good solid punch too. w00t!

July, july, julyyyyyyyy
It's 5!
Wo wo wo wo-weh-wo-weh-wo
Wo wo wo wo-weh-wo-weh-wo....

^
That just about sums up what I feel right now. ^.^

(edit: not the same song!)

I turn my camera on

I cut my fingers on the way
I turn my feelings off
Y'made me untouchable for life
Ooh yeah...

*cue kickass drums/guitar*

That was basically running through my head during my neurosci review session. Now, when I think presynaptic inhibition, I think "It hit me like a tom (bum BUM bum BUM bum BUM...)." So catchy. Spoon's rhythms = perfection. If you haven't yet, buy their new CD, because it is the awesome. Probably not as great as Kill the Moonlight, but I bet it rocks most of the CDs you have anyway. >D

And, Wilco, my beloved band, is going to start recording a new album! Hurrah!

random notes:
- finals with open notes, questions handed out beforehand, that take 1.5 hours, ROCK
- Did you know the shuttle that runs from Mather to Memorial Hall doesn't go the Quad? Because I didn't.
- It's quite strange walking through green, park-spotted, residential areas to go to Pfoho. It's so easy to forget there are real people leading regular lives here.
- Tony! Michelle! Aaaaaaah!!! Aaaaaaaaaaaahh!! Eeeeeeeeeee! Aaaaaaaahhh!
- I want octopus cakes!
- kenya, we have to go to Tokyo, NOW!!

The penguin is now Novick. He's beginning to take a fancy to perching, and, swooping.

Do you have the...

..Three of Spades? Yes? No? Doesn't matter! I played fish on Friday at MIT, for the first time, in nearly a year!! Ahhhh, good times, good times. Ok so I was a tad rusty (but just a tad), but damn that was so refreshing. Hunter-hallway redux! Oh and there was some Liars, Bid Whist, and Smash Brothers as well. I miss games!

And on Saturday, I went to the aquarium with Kristin. Yay for penguins!

And, announcing the newest (and currently, the cutest) member of our room:

S/he doesn't have a name yet. But one will be forthcoming! And, kenya, s/he probably needs a symbol too, cuz you know, we do all our messaging in station language now.

And, to add to the kawaii-ness of the weekend, I&I (get it?) watched Totoro! Eeeee! So furry and plump!

Proposed lyrics to a new Radiohead song:
What do you know?
What do YOU know?
Do you know? Do you KNOW?
You know.
What do I know?
I know.
I know.
You know I know.
What do you know I know?
You don't know?
You don't know.
You never knoooooooooooww. (a la "ruuuuuun" in Creep)
Knoooooooooow-oooooooow-oooooow.
What do you know.

C'mon, you know that they could turn that into something totally listenable. Even if that sounds like the script of a terrible Sesame Street episode.

the obligatory "i'm not drunk anymore!" post

Though, that's not very true, because I was never drunk! Ha!

Reading period is schmoozing along.

A few things learned thus far:
  • Lamont's chairs >>> Cabot's chairs. I tried to study in Cabot and was yet again asleep for more time than I was awake. And they have some bizarre air conditioning that deceives you into thinking it's not on, but then you sit down and BAM! it's really cold! Scary!
  • Don't EVER go to Yenching restaurant. If you're starving and half-dead, I'm sure the thought of being ridiculously ripped off there would give you enough energy to crawl to the Kong.
  • There ARE moral truths. After making sense of the readings from my class, I have arrived at this quite startling conclusion.
So you see, the past week has been quite instructive. I can only hope I can have more revelations next week, and that many of them will involve the study of neuroscience.
